ABOUT:
A Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP) is a specialist who ensures that buildings’ systems and components are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to the owner’s operational requirements and industry standards. The goal is to optimize building performance, improve energy efficiency, and ensure occupant comfort and safety.
The Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP) certification is offered by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). It validates a professional’s expertise in building commissioning processes, focusing on ensuring that new and existing buildings operate as intended to meet the owner’s objectives and efficiency standards.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Acquire Building System Knowledge:
- Acquire technical knowledge of key building systems,
- Understand interactions between building systems to optimize overall performance.
- Identify and resolve system deficiencies to meet design and operational goals.
- Prepare commissioning documentation, including checklists, reports, and system manuals.
- Develop final commissioning reports that detail findings, recommendations, and resolved issues.
- Understand the principles of energy efficiency and their application to building systems.
- Ensure compliance with sustainability standards such as LEED, ASHRAE 90.1, and other green building codes.
- Apply quality control practices to ensure system reliability and safety.
- Identify potential risks during design and construction phases and implement mitigation strategies.
- Incorporate feedback from commissioning projects to improve future processes.
- Understand the differences between commissioning, re-commissioning, and retro-commissioning.
EXAM INFORMATION:
- A proctored, closed book/closed notes, two and one-half hours (2.5),
- 130-item multiple-choice exam.
- Score is based on 120 of the items; the other 10 items, which are interspersed throughout the examination, are included for trial purposes and are not scored.
- Score Needed to Pass BCxP Certification Exam: 83/120
RECERTIFICATION:
- Period: Every 3 years
- Requirements: Participate in one commissioning project, adhere to ASHRAE’s Code of Ethics, and earn 50 professional development hours
- Fee: Recertification fee required

Requirements
- Education & Experience: Requirements vary from 3 to 10 years of experience based on educational qualifications, with at least 5 years in commissioning.
- Commissioning Projects: Must complete three projects (excluding residential buildings) and perform at least six key activities like planning, design review, testing, and reporting.
- Code of Ethics: Compliance with professional ethical standards is mandatory.
- Certification Exam: Passing the BCxP exam is required for certification.

- Bachelor’s Degree Holders in building sciences or equivalent with 5 years of commissioning experience.
- Associate/Technical Degree Holders with 8 years of building industry experience, including 5 years of commissioning experience.
- High School Graduates with 10 years of building industry experience, including 5 years of commissioning experience.
